There Is Nothing Like A Vintage Movie Poster

A vintage movie poster is like a look into the past at something truly wonderful. As a movie fan I could sit and look at old movie posters all day long and I have been known to do just that. Old movie posters have a different look to them then newer movie posters do and there is just something about vintage movie posters that makes the new movie poster look bland and dull. New movie posters basically take a frame from the movie, blow it up to poster size, and then put some text over it and there you have it. The vintage film posters seemed to be alive and had an almost comic book look to them that made them so much fun to look at that it was hard to look away.

Back in the day of antique movie prints there was no television to help sell movies so the antique film prints relied almost exclusively on the poster to help sell the movies. If an old film poster caught people’s attention then they were likely to check out the movie but if the poster fell flat then the movie fell flat as well. There is more than one story about old film posters that tells about how the executives at low budget production companies would spend almost as much money on creating the poster for the movie as they did the movie itself. Sometimes the movie was made based on what the poster looked like! Did the old movies deliver? Usually the low budget B-movies never lived up to their posters and the posters wound up being more fun to look at than the movie. But the blockbusters would usually live up to the expectation the posters set and it was pure magic.

There Is Nothing Like A Vintage Movie Poster

Today you couldn’t sell a movie just based on a poster so the art of making a really good movie poster is a lost one. Now you need a good marketing campaign married with a good soundtrack augmented by a good merchandising campaign with the national fast food restaurants in order to get people out to see the movie. It is such a shame because you can just see the care and artistic talent that went into making those old movie posters. The movie posters of today don’t even compare. Back then the poster almost told the whole story but it also added a lot more to it of course. Today the poster is not nearly as important and sometimes it does look like the poster was a serious afterthought to the rest of the marketing campaign. Sometimes advances in technology don’t always make things better when compared to how things were in the old days. Nostalgia buffs will always prefer the old movie posters to the new ones any day.

Next time you head out to the movie theater take a good look at the movie posters of today and see what they have to offer. Then head out to your local vintage movie store and check out the posters from the old days. When you put the two side by side there just is no comparison and that is why the old movie poster still sell to this day not just as collector’s items but also as pieces of art.
